Job Description:
The Radiologic Technologist provides clinical services according to radiology practice standards and acts as a resource to radiography students and other technologists to ensure optimal department functions. Administers sound patient care practice according to hospital and department policies/procedures to ensure the safety of patients. Demonstrates radiation protection/safety for patients, staff, and self as outlined in department protocols and regulatory guidelines. Maintains equipment, exam rooms, and work areas in a neat and safe condition. Completes ancillary tasks to ensure efficient and consistent departmental operations while demonstrating the initiative for self-development to ensure the proficiency of staff with new technological changes.
Job Responsibilities
- Performs diagnostic imaging procedures using radiologic principles, anatomy, and pathology to determine the most appropriate techniques and/or positioning for optimal examinations.
- Adheres to department policies and protocols by ensuring all examinations are optimized for interpretation; Operates radiological equipment in all care settings (i.e. fluoroscopy, trauma, Emergency department and the Operating Room).
- Operates Imaging and other related equipment according to manufacturers' specifications; Utilizes the proper technique for injection of IV contrast under the American College of Radiology guidelines.
- Assists in teaching radiography students sound radiography principles.
- Communicates effectively with patients to obtain clinical history and informed consent from patients' and/or patients' charts to assist physicians in optimizing the performance and interpretation of examinations; Explains procedures to patients/families and answers any questions to ease anxiety and assure patient cooperation; Correctly identifies patients and their files while ensuring a high degree of accuracy. Tracks patients according to department procedures.
- Assists physicians in performing a variety of examinations by using standard department protocols, isolation precautions, and/or sterile techniques.
- Recognizes clinical and/or emergent problems that may interfere with exams and takes appropriate action to resolve them and produce the most desirable outcomes.
- Promotes radiation protection/safety for patients, staff and self as outlined in department protocols and regulatory guidelines to ensure the safety of patients and staff. Maintains exposure readings within the "As Low As Reasonably Achievable" limits; Ensures patient safety in department through the use of side rails, braking mechanisms and patient monitoring.
- Reports, documents and corrects any adverse, unsafe or unusual condition; Maintains equipment, exam rooms and work areas in a neat and safe condition; Ensures that rooms are appropriately stocked with supplies for procedures. Troubleshoots equipment effectively and reports equipment to Biomedical Engineering and/or vendors; Performs/recognizes the need for routine maintenance of imagers/processors to maintain consistent quality images.
- May perform additional duties as assigned.
Additional Requirements
Certification - American Registered Radiologic Technologists within 12 months of hire; Basic Life Support upon start.Licensure - Licensed Radiologic Technologist Upon Start Must be licensed as required by the state of employment if employed at an Inova Health System free-standing Imaging Center not affiliated with an Inova hospital.Experience - One year of combined classroom and clinical training in radiology. Recent experience in a hospital/healthcare environment as a Radiologic Technologist or studentEducation - Graduate of an accredited radiology school or program.
