Program Director for New Diagnostic Radiology Residency – Roanoke, VA
Carilion Clinic is seeking a BC/BE Radiologist to join our practice in Roanoke, VA as the program director for a new diagnostic Radiology residency program.
Program Director:
- Carilion clinic leadership has committed to financially support a new diagnostic radiology residency program at Carilion Clinic and the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine in Roanoke, VA.
- This program is planned to be a 4 resident per year program.
- ACGME requires 3-years of educational and/or administrative experience, 3-years as a faculty member in an ACGME approved radiology residency program would meet this requirement.

- The program director will have responsibility, authority, and accountability for: administration and operations; teaching and scholarly activity; resident recruitment and selection, evaluation, and promotion of residents, and disciplinary action; supervision of residents; and resident education in the context of patient care.
- 40% protected non-clinical time allocation to administer the program.
- Will be supported by DIO and GME office currently overseeing 14 residency programs and 16 fellowship programs at Carilion Clinic.
Compensation and Other Benefits:
- Compensation: $596,641.00 per year base with potential to make $700,000.00+ per year after bonuses.

- Carilion is a not-for-profit healthcare organization and therefore physicians are eligible to participate in the federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program.
- Virginia is a tort reform state with limits on maximum malpractice claims. Carilion provides malpractice AND extended reporting period (Tail Coverage) Insurance to all employed physicians.
Clinical Work:
- Mostly dayshifts from 8AM to 5-6PM.
- Swing shifts from Noon to 8PM – Approximately 1 swing shift every 3 weeks on average.
- Evening shift from 5PM to 11PM – Approximately 1 evening shift every 3 weeks on average.
- Weekend schedule: 3 Weekends per year.
- Mix of subspecialty as well as general worklist assignments including reading for busy level 1 trauma center and thrombectomy capable stroke center.
- SECTRA PACS, Powerscribe One reporting with AI automated impressions, EPIC EMR, Syngo.Via/TeraRecon/3Mensio Advanced Visualization.
- Hybrid position with some days assigned to work from home. Carilion will provide a full diagnostic workstation including diagnostic BARCO monitor.
- Day and evening Reading Room Assistant for troubleshooting and contacting referring providers.
- Mammography is not required.
- Participation in tumor boards (Oncolens online platform) and practice quality improvement is expected.
Academic Work:
- In addition to program director duties:
- Mentor residents in QA/QI and research projects with the goal of state/national presentations and scholarly publications.
- All Radiologists will receive academic appointments at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine.
- Light teaching requirements for medical students and non-Radiology residents.
Lifestyle Focused Practice:
- Deep overnight shift covered by teleradiology.
- 50 days of vacation per year and up to an additional 5 holidays off per year.
Growing Clinic and Practice:
- $400 million Cardiovascular Institute expansion tower to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital – opened in July 2025.
- $100 million new 7-story cancer center – under construction, scheduled to open in 2027.
- New 80,000 sq ft outpatient pediatric clinic opened in 2021.
- New 37,000 sq ft mental health clinic opened in 2023.
- Year-over-year increases in imaging volume.
The posted salary range may not reflect the full value of the total compensation package. You are eligible to participate in the Tier 1 and Tier 2 bonus compensation programs to improve the minimum salary. Historical averages of Tier 1 and Tier 2 bonus earnings are included in the maximum salary. In addition, comprehensive benefits and pension offerings further enhance the overall rewards package.
